PREPARATION & PLANTING

This planting season didn’t come on gradually, it warmed up quickly! Seemingly overnight we were spurred to prep ALL the fields for the year’s plantings. It’s a rush, but necessary to get all the spring planting done before any chancees of spring rains.

All the Christmas tree seedlings will be planted by the beginning of April. We’ve been moving quickly to clear the land for thousands of baby trees. The lavender field will be moved to a new location this year and we are seeding cover crops and laying weed barrier this week!

At the end of long windy day last week, Kip was discing the sorghum field used for Field of Screams. He turned back to check his progress and noticed flames. The disc must have struck something causing a spark and the gusty day caused a quick spread.

We are thankful to the Sedwick County Fire department who arrived quickly and acted swiftly. We’ve expressed how dry things have been recently and this field fire was proof. It took only minutes for the spark to spread over a large area. Damage in the area was minimal. Sadly, a small batch of future Christmas trees were damaged and with the slow growth of trees lately, we are disappointed. But everyone is safe and so, as always, we have reason to be thankful!
